Are Ladybugs Destructive?

It’s important first to understand that there are good and bad ladybugs. The small red ladybug with a few black spots is the cute insect we welcome into our gardens. They can congregate in your home if they find a way in, but they are not destructive to your house. In this case, it can be said that they are sometimes a nuisance pest but pose no threat to humans or animals.

However, multicolored Asian lady beetles look similar to ladybugs, but their cons outweigh the pros.

What is the Asian Lady Beetle?

They were introduced into North America in the early 1900s to combat aphids. But they’ve become more of a problem because they have overtaken the native species and our homes.

They look almost identical to native ladybugs, but there is a distinctive way to identify the two. You’ll see a white M-shaped marking just behind the Asian lady beetles head. They also come in other colors besides red, such as yellow and orange.

Asian lady beetles do not sting, carry diseases, and do not chew on wood or clothing. However, they can invade a home in huge quantities. They can secrete a strong-smelling yellowish liquid from the joints of their legs. This liquid can also stain light-colored surfaces.

How to Get Rid of Ladybugs?

You can take several proactive measures to deter them from entering your home. Caulking around your windows and doors to seal any cracks can help. Make sure that all screens and vent covers are secured tightly. Use cleaning products with citrus oil as this repels them. Bay leaves and cloves also repel them. However, these things may help somewhat but may not keep them out entirely.

If you have a ladybug infestation, especially one that keeps recurring, call Titan Pest & Wildlife. We will not only remove the ladybugs from your home, but we will keep them from returning.
