Most people think ladybugs are cute and perceive them as less gross, cleaner, and safer than other types of bugs. Ladybugs are a good sign for those that garden because it can mean fewer pest problems, particularly aphids. However, if your home has been infested with ladybugs, you might have a different opinion.

Ladybugs often make their way into a house searching for warmth and a place to hold up for the winter. As the weather cools in early fall, the heat inside the home attracts them, and they crawl inside. And while they may be cute, these tiny beetles emit a stinky and lingering odor when squashed or disturbed. You might not notice this with one or two ladybugs, but if you have hundreds of them in your home, you likely will.

We understand that when it comes to pests, there aren’t any one-size-fits-all solutions. We customize our plans to the specific requirements of each home and ensure that your needs and expectations are met with care and professionalism.

What are Ladybugs?

There are about 5,000 different types of ladybugs throughout the world. Also known as lady beetles or ladybird beetles, these tiny beetles come in various colors and patterns. However, in North America, the most familiar is the seven-spotted ladybug with its shiny, red and black body. Most of them have oval, dome-shaped bodies with short little legs. Ladybugs are not dangerous to humans. Most people like them because they are pretty, and farmers love them because they eat aphids and other plant-eating pests.

Not all of them are red and black. Depending on the species, they can have stripes, spots, or no markings at all. The seven-spotted ladybugs are red or orange with three dots on each side and one in the middle.

They are colorful for a good reason. Their bright color tells predators that they don’t taste good. When threatened, they emit an oily, foul-tasting fluid. Ladybugs lay their eggs on the underside of a leaf, usually where there are a lot of aphids.

Ladybug Infestations

If you see one or two ladybugs in your home, there’s no need to worry. However, when ladybugs invade, they may enter your house by the hundreds, even thousands. There have been reports of as many as 15,000 ladybugs invading a single home!

The most common areas ladybugs congregate within a property include:

  • Behind walls
  • Windowpanes
  • Ceilings
  • Siding crevices and cracks
  • Building foundations
  • Door jams

Ladybugs invade to look for shelter from the cold, so you’re likely to encounter them in your home in late fall or early winter once the temperature drops. They’re looking for a warm place to hibernate until early spring. When they find a place they like, they will release pheromones to attract them back to the same site. This is why you may encounter them year after year.

How to Get Rid of Ladybugs

There are several proactive measures you can take to deter them from entering your home. Caulking around your windows and doors to seal any cracks can help. Make sure that all screens and vent covers are secured tightly. Use cleaning products with citrus oil as this repels them. Bay leaves and cloves also repel them. However, these things may help somewhat but may not keep them out entirely.

If you have a ladybug infestation, especially one that keeps recurring, call Titan Pest & Wildlife. We will not only remove the ladybugs from your home, but we will keep them from returning.
