Facts About Skunks
Missouri is home to two species of skunks – the striped skunk and the eastern spotted skunk. The striped skunk, also the most common, reaches an average size of 6-8 pounds. The spotted skunk is much smaller, typically weighing 2-3 pounds.
Skunks are easy to identify, and they’re well-known for their smell. But what you may not know is that they are destructive little critters that pose a significant threat to your health, pets, and property.
They are common carriers of rabies and carry diseases such as tularemia, leptospirosis, and canine distemper. They transmit these diseases through their bites, not by spraying. Skunk spray is a defense mechanism used only when they feel distressed or threatened. If a human or animal comes in contact with skunk spray, it can cause nausea or vomiting.
Skunks are often found living in crawlspaces, basements, under porches, and patios. They also take up residence in empty hot tubs, under sheds, and in other structures around your property. They will build nests and have their young in these areas. While skunks are not aggressive by nature, they will spray when they feel in danger.

Skunk Removal and Cleanup
A common problem many people face is the clean-up after the animal is removed. When skunks take up residence in sheds, basements, crawlspaces, and other structures, they leave behind feces and urine. Unattended waste can transmit diseases, such as large piles of droppings or urine-soaked drywall and insulation left behind. The bacteria within animal waste is a health hazard from direct contact or breathing in airborne particles.
Animal clean-up following an infestation is critical to keep your family and pets safe! Did you know that animal droppings are full of diseases? For instance, animals like skunks can carry distemper, which can transfer to your dog if they discover the droppings.
As a full-service wildlife removal company, we will inspect your home or property for any signs of a skunk infestation. Once we safely remove them, we will ensure they stay gone.
